With this event at Tufts, Haruki Murakami made a second recent public appearance in the Boston area, following his October reading and Q&A at MIT.
The Tufts event was open to public just like the MIT one, but the small lecture hall was half-empty in stark contrast to the chaotic crowd overflow situation at MIT. The event was hosted by Tufts professor Hosea Hirata who has known Murakami since their time together at Tufts and Princeton many years ago. Murakami seemed a little stiffer and less chatty than he was at MIT, but he seemed to loosen up as the event progressed. Hirata helped warm him up as well as the room by showing amusing PowerPoint visual aids and sharing his memories of Murakami in the years past.
After a discussion about his books and the experience of writing them, Murakami did two sets of readings, both picked out by Hirata who introduced them as revealing the funny side of Murakami. Indeed, the selections were hilarious, taking Murakami's trademark sense of the absurd and the deadpan and pushing them further into comedic territory. The first reading was of 3 brief stories: Wrench, Julio Iglesias (Murakami cracked up in the middle of reading it and had to pause for a second) and Cards. The second reading was of selections from Matatabi A Bitatama, his book of Japanese palindromes and related stories.
During the Q&A, I asked Murakami (1) if he had seen, sought out or avoided any of the recent adaptations of his works into film and theater, and (2) if he had any advice or comments for people who are interested in adapting his writings using other media. Somewhat disappointingly, he said he has not watched any of the adaptations. He feels that those are the works of other people in other professions, and as a writer, he is not so interested in them. Not a very interesting or helpful answer. But I suppose I should be grateful that he remains focused on his own art and craft after more than 25 years of writing.
Note that the audio quality of the MP3 files is poor. Video recording was prohibited, so I only managed to get the audio by keeping my camera hidden while recording.
